One of the main reasons that we decided to fly to the Gold Coast was so that the girls could see my grandmother again. We are going to help celebrate her 99th birthday with my aunt and other various family members. I'm looking forward to that!
Today I drove to Alstonville to visit my grandmother while the rest of the family stayed in Byron Bay. They really don't need to see her more than once. My grandmother is very special to me. Most of my memories of her also involve my grandfather. As a kid, I took the unconditional love of my grandparents for granted. It never occurred to me that grandparents were anything other than giving, loving and totally devoted. Nana is still like that, but every time I see her, she has noticeably deteriorated. Grandpa died 12 years ago and Nana never really recovered from the loss.
I am grateful for the love of my grandmother. She is no longer the vibrant and vivacious person I remember from my childhood, but she still loves me and can only see the goodness in anything that I do.
